Oval hollow form with Pyrography - Mahogany 6"

2016

majestic eagle

This is an oval hollow form made from one of my favorite woods, Mahogany. It is 6 inches tall, sanded to 1200 grit, coated with paste wax, and buffed to a satin finish.

This art piece is one in a series. One of my favorite woodturners, Curt Theobald, said to me "The only way to get good is to make a series." Now, a series can be a minimum of 3 pieces and no maximum - just keep makin' 'em!

This art piece is completely over-engineered.
My father-in-law, Glenn Ziegle, once told me there comes a time in every project where it's necessary to shoot the engineer and make the damn thing!

close-up of pyrography

Woodburning the image inside the art piece is the most exciting and enjoyable step in the process, but don't make any mistakes - you can't erase woodburning!

Each time I make an oval hollow form with pyrography for someone, I get to design an image that is special to them. Woodturning does not get any better than this!

even closer view of pyrography

As you can image, wood burning on the finished surface is a challenge, make a mistake and there is not enough wall thickness to sand it off but now try it on a curved surface!

The image was first sketched on a sheet of paper, giving me a source of reference.

backside

The backside of the artwork is also finish sanded to 1200 grit, the same as the front and insides. At this surface finish it does not need a top coat finish a coat of paste wax, buffed to a satin finish that will not change color and lasts a lifetime is all that's needed.
