This Crane is indeed misplaced. It doesn't belong on a website with woodturnings, but I decided to use it as a sort of bookend for the gallery of art pieces, since it is also an art piece.
Back in 1985, I took a carving class with Master Carver Nick Disparti, a local legend. He said Southern California Avocado Wood was superior to most other woods for carving. It is soft, even color, straight grained, and can be carved while green (wet) or dry with equal ease.
This is my first real carving. It is sanded to 400 grit and left natural color. The finish is a top coat of varnish.
