"baby sea traveler"
oval hollow form with pyrography - mahogany 6"

2017

looking out - cautiously

This is an oval hollow form. It is made from Mahogany, sanded to 1200 grit, coated with paste wax, and buffed to a pleasing satin finish that will last a lifetime. The base is Gaboon Ebony, which is pitch black throughout and it's sawdust is like lamp black.

Sometimes it's just plain fun to be whimsical and make a design that uniquely fits someone special's interest. That's how this baby sea turtle became the Baby Sea Traveler.

This type of art piece is completely over-engineered. My father-in-law, Glenn Ziegle, once told me there comes a time in every project where it's necessary to shoot the engineer and make the damn thing!

By the way, when you're woodburning, the art piece is almost finished, so if you make a mistake, there is no way to fix it - the walls are already too thin.

another view

With the view above and this one, you get a full view of the baby sea turtle.

close-up

This view gives you a close-up view of the pyrography. During woodburning, I have my sketch nearby in case I forget what a sea turtle really looks like.
